Welcome to Friesland Cheese Land
We Frisians have been conquering land from the sea for centuries. During the time of the Romans, the Frisian Empire (Magna Frisia) covered the entire northern coast of the Netherlands (and Germany). A large part of this area was regularly flooded. The salty seawater washed more and more silt onto the land via so-called creek channels. This created a salty, rich breeding ground. On this soil there are now vast meadows where our Frisian cows graze. This gives our cheese that delicious, distinctive flavor.
